SMUG JUG

On August 25th, 2017, Tumblr user @fancybroom posted the following photo they took in a North Carolina craft shop with the caption:

Me: I’m not going to turn into a hand made clay jug tonight !

Me after 7 tequila shots:

Note: while we know the exact craft shop the jug came from and the man who made them, I'm ommiting that info as of now because it's a small local shop and I don't want to cause a doxx or something. However, the craft shop has been closed for a while now so unfortunately you cannot purchase a jug of your own.

This was just the beginning.

On July 9th, 2023, the following gif (in non-looping form) was sent in a tumblr ask:

This model and animation of the Jug was made by Tumblr user @moctor in Maya and was thus circulated around the internet. Please let me know if there is an earlier appearance of this gif.

Later, on December 9th, 2023, mocktor ported the model over to blender and animated this gif, posting it on their tumblr.

In the following days more Smug Jug variants were posted, bringing forth a veritable collection.

On December 14th, 2023, moctor posted the basic spinning gif in response to someone asking where the jug came from, they themself wondering where it came from. On the same day, @fancybroom noticed it reblogged on @my-hobby-is-finding-the-source, and reblogged with a comment about how they found the jug.

Early on May 14th, 2024, moctor returned with the news that they had gone on to 3d print the jug.

Later that same day, moctor posted more animations, showing off a new rig they were working on.

This is the story of the Smug Jug thus far.

All animated jug images sourced from @moctor. Click on them to go to the original posts.
Big thank you to @crispyskinwalker for info about the origin of the jug!
